{Surf Set with Illume Hot Yoga}

As I mentioned yesterday this past weekend I had the opportunity to try out a Surf Set class with some of the Blog Squad.

Ashley, Ange, Jo, Leslie

I had been seeing signs in our neighborhood about the new Surf Set class up at Illume Hot Yoga {in Evanston} and kept saying I wanted to try it out. I am so thankful to have this group of ladies who are all game for trying out new workouts together. So I contacted Telara the owner of Illume Hot Yoga and she happily hosted us for a private class.

"SURFSET Fitness Inc. was founded in 2011 by Mike Hartwick, Sarah Ponn & Bill Ninteau.

Mike played professional hockey after graduating from Dartmouth College, and would head to California during his off seasons to surf. As his hockey career started to wind down and he started to spend more time on the beach and less in the gym, he was worried that he wouldn't be in game shape heading back to his last season of pro hockey because he had spent the entire summer surfing instead of working out. He was surprised to discover how much better he felt on his skates that Fall: leaner, faster, stronger and less bulky.

He retired from hockey to take a job in finance, and he couldn't find the motivation to work out anymore after 15 years of relentless hockey routines. He started to search for a way to mimic the workout he got from surfing so he could maintain his lean surfer physique. Mike began to work out on top of his surfboard attached to an inflatable inner tube, and he & Bill brought this contraption to a gym in Boston one day for a workout, where they met fitness trainer Sarah Ponn who was very intrigued by what they were doing. She helped them develop a routine for the board and they both saw amazing results within one month. The three of them realized this workout that delivered all of the physical benefits of surfing without stepping foot in the ocean would appeal to a lot of people looking for an athletic body type & an extremely fun way to get fit. They built 11 prototypes and started to travel the country, offering classes in the SURFSET workout method on the boards. They caught the eye of billionaire investor & Dallas Mavericks owner, Mark Cuban, when they appeared with SURFSET on ABC's hit show Shark Tank. They are now working with Mark Cuban and continuing to grow the SURFSET brand worldwide, with classes now offered at over 200 locations in the 18 countries.

We arrived at Illume Hot Yoga a few minute before class to sign forms and get a quick tour of the studio. They opened in November and have 2 rooms - a large {& gorgeous} hot yoga studio as well as the Surf Set room. They have local art featured throughout the space {including awesome reclaimed wood} and it is just beautiful. Bonus: the whole place smelled delicious and fresh.

Telara gave us a quick overview of Surf Set, the boards and what to expect in class and before we knew it we were riding the waves - on land! There was a large projection on the front wall of surfing videos including beautiful waves and beaches plus Telara had a great play list of music so the vibe of the class was really fun too. Plus laughing at ourselves was welcomed!

I had no idea what to expect class to be like but right away I was surprised by how tricky it was and how tough class would be. I think everyone was working up a sweat just after warm up!

Our class was a blend class that consisted of a warm up, a cardio set, a lower body strength set, another cardio set, an upper body strength set followed by core & balance work then cool down. Exercises included {plus much more!} squats, lunges, burpees, push-ups, planks, tricep dips, swimming, paddling - sounds simple but wasn't! Even the simplest movement was that much harder on the board and worked muscles that don't often get challenged. Class was 45 minutes and honestly few by.

Class was SO much fun and totally different than anything I have ever done. I definitely recommend this class to anyone who wants to add something fun and new to their current workouts routine. I think it would be impossible not to have fun!
They have an introductory offer for 1 month unlimited Hot Yoga and Surf Set classes for $50 or you can choose one of those for $40. I am definitely taking advantage of this offer and plan to sign up soon.
Anyone want to join me?!

A huge thank you Telara & Illume Hot Yoga for hosting us for this class and to Ange & Chase This Skirt for these awesome tanks! They have our personal instagram handle on the back!
